A Tennessee woman was having a security system installed to protect herself from a stalker only to find him hiding under her bed on June 21.
Fifty-two-year-old Tony Joe Gunter had dated the woman for two years before she broke with him in June 2016 after finding about his “extensive criminal history,” WZTV reports.
After she told him never to return to her home, Gunter told her "I will kill you, you stupid c***."
Since then, she says the man had broken into her home multiple times - to the point where she was forced to file an order of protection, the New York Daily News reports.
“She was warning me about her ex-boyfriend and not to let him around me or my home,” one neighbor recalled, WKRN reports.
She finally decided to purchase an ADT security system. Yet the very day she had it installed, she found Gunter’s foot under her bed while searching for her cell phone.
It turned out Gunter had taken the phone, later admitting to police he did not want her to call the cops.
Quickly, she told the person installing the system to call 911 while she held Gunter at gunpoint, shooting him in the left foot.
Authorities arrested the man who will now be facing multiple charges such as aggravated burglary, stalking, theft and more. After receiving medical treatment, the men was put in jail and is being held on a $165,000 bond.
Gunter had previously been in trouble in 2014 for driving under the influence a fourth time. His license was suspended.
Neighbors were happy the woman was now safe.
“Good for her,” neighbor, Mary Alice Lovell, said.
“They’ve had violence over there before. I can’t blame her for that,” she continued. “In this case, if he was trying to abuse her and she had a gun and she had a restraining order against him, then she has to protect herself.”
Police agree the woman shot the man in self-defense, and she will likely not face any charges.
