U.S. marshals picked up Gary M.J. “Mikel” Grodin while he was walking down a street in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after he fled from Swansea, Illinois, having been charged with raping a 10-year-old girl over the course of at least two months while he was living with the girl’s mother, an ex-girlfriend.
Grodin’s victim told police he would force her to undress, restrain her with zip-ties and then take photos and videos of her. Police later recovered images of the homemade child pornography from Grodin’s phone, reports Belleville News-Democrat.
One of Grodin’s friends initially reported the alleged sexual assault after Grodin sent his friend a Facebook message saying he was sexually active with the elementary school student and in love with her, St. Louis Today reported.
The victim’s mother was not aware of the assault and police said she was distraught when she learned what happened.
Although authorities in Oklahoma are trying to extradite Grodin to Illinois, he has not consented to being moved back to the St. Clair County Jail, said Swansea Police Chief Steve Johnson.
Now, Oklahoma will have to file charges against Grodin to hold him and St. Clair County prosecutors will ask Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner to issue an arrest warrant for Grodin. The warrant will then go to Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin.
