The pro-gun Armed Citizen Project recently announced that it will spend $12,000 to hand out free shotguns in Tucson, Arizona neighborhoods with high crime rates.
According to TalkingPointsMemo.com, the Armed Citizen Project believes this is a logical solution because the city's underfunded police department is facing budget cuts.
“We need to take back our city, and it needs to come back to the citizens and not the criminals,” said former mayoral candidate Shaun McClusky, who leads the Armed Citizen Project. “Right now, the criminal element is winning.”
McClusky and others will soon begin spreading leaflets and posting fliers around Tucson to get residents to sign up for the free shotgun program, reports the Arizona Daily Star.
"Saying guns are responsible for killing people is like saying spoons are responsible for making people fat," McClusky said. "If someone wants to bring me the publicity for free and sue me, bring it on."
Tucson Councilman Steve Kozachik called the Armed Citizen Project “absolute lunacy” and added: “These people have lost their minds."
Tucson, Arizona is the site of the assassination attempt against former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ) two years ago. Thirteen people were injured and six others were killed in the shooting.
