A 22-year-old intern at an upscale preschool in Midtown was charged with sexually abusing 13 children, according to authorities.
The alleged events occurred at International Preschool, which caters to wealthy, international families -- including those with ties to the UN.
Malthe Thomsen was arrested last Friday after allegedly placing the hands of nine different children on his genitals over his clothing. He also reportedly pressed the head of a 10th child against his clothed genitals and rubbed the buttocks of three other children the same way.
All of the alleged victims were boys and girls ages 4 or 5.
Thomsen appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on Thursday where a judge indicted him on felony charges and put him behind bars.
“The judge summarily found, without saying why, there was reasonable cause to find there was felony committed," defense attorney David Fisher said.
According to Fisher, the abuse wasn’t reported by the children, but a school worker who claimed to have seen Thomsen grope one of the students. An in-classroom monitor was then placed in the school to observe Thomsen’s actions and his co-workers were interviewed regarding his behavior.
The school itself deemed the accusation of child abuse unfounded, according to International Preschool director Donna Cohen.
Thomsen was accompanied in court by his two mothers who flew in from Copenhagaen.
“We know it’s not true,” Brigitte Thomsen said. “Every parent would say that he’s from a family of preschool teachers.
Mrs. Thomsen insisted that in Denmark people don’t have the same fear of touching, and noted that it’s common to place a child on your lap if he’s upset.
Mrs. Thomsen added that her son is not a child abuser, but a loving and caring man.
