A pregnant teacher has been arrested after she was accused of having sex with a teenage student.
Katherine Ruth Harper, 27, a seventh-grade English teacher and cheerleading coach at John M. Tidwell Middle School in Trophy Club, Texas, was arrested in March and charged with having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old male student, Daily Mail reports.
Harper, who is married, allegedly had sex with the boy multiple times. Harper is now pregnant, and it is not clear whether the teenage boy is the baby's father.
"She's about eight months pregnant, so if we go back in time it's around when that event took place, but she is married, we believe, still. So we're not sure what that leads to," said Trophy Club Police Chief Patrick Arata.
Authorities found out about the alleged relationship from an anonymous tip through the district's website. The boy reportedly told the principal of Byron Nelson High School through tears that he had had sexual encounters with Harper.
Harper had been the boy's former tennis coach and had taught him when he was in middle school, KDFW reports.
"One thing led to another," the boy reportedly said, "and she told me to 'put it in,' and I did."
Other occasions where the two met up allegedly involved drinking alcohol, as well as the boy performing oral sex on Harper. The teacher had also allegedly sent naked photos to the student.
Police say the teen and Harper communicated around 76 times from the beginning of June to the end of July in 2016. Police have reportedly seized the teen's phone.
Harper was placed on administrative leave after school officials learned about the alleged relationship in December. Officials had initially received a tip in September, but didn't have the student's name or enough to go on until the December tip, the Star-Telegram reports.
Harper faces charges of improper relationship between an educator and student, a second-degree felony. She was arrested in March before being released on a $15,000 bail.
In a similar case earlier in March, a female teacher from Austin, Texas, was put on probation and given community service after pleading guilty to having sexual contact with two students, The Sun reports.
Haley Wey, 29, had sex with one of the 17-year-old boys 10 times, and had sexual contact with the other in a hammock.
The former math teacher from Westlake High School had met one of the victims at a student program in 2015, before joining him and his family on a ministry trip to Africa.
"The victim said while in Africa his relationship with Ms. Wey become more personal and on a deeper level," said a police report. "The victim stated while in Africa their relationship became physical."
The sexual relationship continued for two months until the boy said he had heard Wey went hiking with another male student. She had told the second boy to bring a hammock for the hike.
The second victim told police he had expected to have sex with Wey on the hike. "A teacher just doesn’t hang out with a student to hang out," he said.
Under Texas state law, it is illegal for a teacher to have sex with a student, even if they are 17, the legal age of consent in the state. Wey resigned from Westlake in October 2015.
Wey pleaded guilty to the charges and was given 10 years of parole along with 200 hours of community service. She will not have to register as a sex offender.
