Football Star's Girlfriend Pours Boiling Water Over Him

A college football player in Florida will not be playing the rest of the season following an altercation with his girlfriend that left him covered in burns.

Jonnu Smith, a senior tight end at Florida International University (FIU), was severely burned on his head, back, neck, arm and shoulder on Halloween after his pregnant girlfriend poured a pot of boiling water over his head following a day of intense arguments, the Miami Herald reports, citing an arrest affidavit.

Mary Gaspar, who is five months pregnant, was charged with aggravated battery by police. She informed FIU police that she spent the day of the incident arguing with Smith over the attention Smith was paying her and their relationship, the affidavit reveals.

She highlighted she was "feeling extremely emotional and stressed" when she allegedly poured the boiling water over him. When Smith failed to react strongly enough for her, she started hitting him with her hands, she told police.

Arrested two days after the incident, she has since pleaded not guilty and was released by police on a pretrial order, the Daily Mail reports.

It is unclear how severe Smith's burns are but he is out for the rest of the college football season, it was announced on Nov. 10, USA Today reports.

Smith is one of Panthers' best players, with 1,936 career receiving yards and 17 career touchdowns. He had 441  yards off 39 catches in the current season and is a candidate to be picked by the NFL Draft, either as a late-round pick or undrafted free agent. FIU will not be playing in a bowl game.
