In brief: The Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid electric vehicle made a huge splash at Geneva and is now offered in limited numbers for pre-purchase and production.
Vehicle in the news
Make/Model: 918 Spyder PHEV
When the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid hit the Geneva Motor Show last year, it was an instant show-stopper and became the talk of the press, dominating show news.
Now Porsche has announced that they will be producing 918 of the 500hp Spyder PHEVs and will begin production on 9/18, 2013. They are taking pre-orders through any Porsche dealer now with delivery beginning in November 2013.

The 918 Spyder PHEV will sell for €645,000 ($915,000USD with VAT) in Europe and $845,000US in North America (not including destination charges).
The production vehicle will almost mirror the concept car shown in 2010, but will use a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic monocoque and a manual convertible roof system and panels. The same high-rev V8 which displaces over 4.0L, based on the RS Spyder racing engine, will be used. A 7-gear compact Porsche-Doopelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) is the transmission along with two synchronized electric motors - one on each front wheel.
Liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery packs are placed strategically around the car to even weight and charge in about 3 hours (German) or 7 hours (US), depending on standard outlet capacity.
For your slightly less than a million smackers, you get 0-62mph acceleration times of 3.2 seconds (or less), a 199mph top speed, and even the capability of going 94mph on electric power alone.
And so ...
In their generosity, Porsche is allowing pre-purchase buyers to get a bargain on the 2011 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder to hold them over until the 2013 release date for the PHEV.
