A 91-year-old woman in Poland woke up and found herself in a morgue after she was declared dead and spent an astounding 11 hours in a cold storage facility.
Janina Kolkiewicz woke up complaining about the cold hours after a doctor examined her and announced to her family that she had died, reports BBC News.
“I was sure she was dead,” said Dr. Wieslawa Czyz. “I’m stunned. I don’t understand what happened. Her heart stopped beating, she was no longer breathing.”
The doctor was called to look at Kolkiewicz after her niece says she came home one morning and discovered she didn’t seem to be breathing or have a pulse. After declaring her dead, the woman’s family actually began making preparations for her funeral, which was set to take place two days later.
Kolkiewicz, who suffers from late-stage dementia, according to her niece, now says she feels “normal” and “fine.” She was given two pancakes and a bowl of soup to help warm her up and the death certificate issued in her name has reportedly been declared invalid.
Police are investigating the incident.
