A stepfather was prevented from saving his 3-year-old son when police tased him three times for attempting to enter his burning home in Louisiana, Mo.

The fire started while the parents and child were asleep, in separate rooms, in the early morning hours of Nov. 1 (video below).

The parents were not able to get to the child from the room they were sleeping in, so they exited the house and called 911.

Stepfather Ryan Miller tried to kick down the front door to get inside and save 3-year-old Riley Miller.

However, Ryan was restrained and tased three times by a police officer.

A firefighter attempted to enter the home, but the flames were too hot, according to State Fire Marshal Investigator Scott Stoneberger.

Riley was later found dead near the doorway to his bedroom and the house was completely destroyed.

“It’s just heartless. How could they be so heartless?” sister-in-law Emily Miller told KHQA. “And while they all just stood around and waited for the fire department, what kind of police officer wouldn’t try and save a three year old burning in a house?”

Grandmother Lori Miller added, “He tried to get back in the house to get the baby. They took my son to jail because he tried to save his son.”

Both parents, Ryan and Cathy Miller, were taken to the Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Ill. by family members.

People who want to help the Miller family can make donations to the Mercantile Bank in Louisiana, c/o "Ryan Miller" or the "Riley Miller fund."

According to KSDK, friends and family members held a memorial for Riley on the town's Mississippi river front on Sunday night.

Family members told KSDK that they're angry that Ryan was tased while trying to save Riley, but wouldn't talk about it any further.
