A police officer in Pembroke Pines, Florida was arrested after authorities say he stole a watch while responding to a jewelry store burglary on Wednesday morning.
Officer Kevin Burgs was charged with grand theft for stealing a watch worth $795. Burgs, 36, was one of two officers that responded to the call of the early morning burglary, and he himself was caught on surveillance video slipping the watch into his pocket.
The original break-in happened at 4:41 a.m. at Jared the Galleria of Jewelry in Pembroke Pines. Two suspects entered through the roof of the building, smashed display cases, caused $10,000 in damages, and stole about $75,000 worth of jewelry.
While Burgs only stole one thing from the crime scene, many say it discourages them that they are unable to trust police officers.
"That’s really bad, if you can’t trust the police who can you trust?" said concerned resident Flor Morales.
The Pembroke Pines Police Department issued a statement condemning Burgs’ actions.
"Public trust is vital to our partnership with the community,” said the police department in a statement. “It is important to note that we held this officer accountable for his actions and charged him appropriately. We will remain transparent and provide updates as this matter progresses. This one act is not representative of the rest of our police department. We are extremely proud of our employees and thankful for their constant dedication and hard work."
Burgs is a nine-year veteran of the Pembroke Police, and following the theft, he has been placed on paid suspension while the investigation continues.
