Police Officer Arrested For Killing Dog By Cutting Its Throat (Video)

A Baltimore police officer is facing animal cruelty charges after he slit the throat of a lost dog that officers were trying to rescue.

According to reports, Sarah Gossard’s dog Nala escaped from her backyard one morning, so she took to Facebook to post pictures in the hopes that someone would find her.

Eventually, neighbor Sandy Fleischer found Nala, but when she tried to rescue her, the obviously scared dog nipped at her. Fleischer then called the police to have them come help retrieve the dog to return to Gossard, but one officer took the rescue way too far.

"The dog was more scared of not knowing where it was and being thirsty and disoriented,” said Fleischer. “The dog bit me out of fear because I tried to touch it, which was my fault.”

Police arrived and tried to detain Nala using sticks, and although she was not being aggressive, Fleischer says the officers used unnecessarily harsh methods to try and get a hold of the dog.

"You could hear the dog screaming and crying in pain," said Fleischer. "I did see one officer that had been extremely aggressive that did have his knee into her chest that was tightening the noose. It seemed [they were doing it] relentlessly and unnecessarily."

What Fleischer did not know was that Officer Jeremy Bolger, who responded to the scene, already had other plans for the dog when he got there. Reports say that when Bolger got out of his patrol car to get the dog, he nonchalantly said, “I’m going to fucking gut this thing.”

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what Bolger did. While police were attempting to detain the dog, Bolger took out his knife and slit the dog’s throat. Sadly, the dog died.

“Unfortunately, at some point after the dog was contained, one of our officers used a knife and cut the dog's throat,” Baltimore Police Deputy Commissioner Dean Palmere said. “This is outrageous and an unacceptable breach of our protocol.”

Gossard says that she is outraged that her dog was killed for no reason and says she cannot believe that Bolger would do something so cruel.

“She was just the sweetest dog and would never hurt anyone,” Gossard said. “She was just scared that day, and through all of those events -- being scared and lost, thirsty, hungry -- yes I'm very sure that she bit someone, but the actions after that were not OK.”

Bolger has now been arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty.
