The mother of a 2- to 3-year-old girl found abandoned at Independence eve celebrations Friday evening was located out of state by police late Saturday.
According to KTVQ, police found the girl alone in a stroller in Civic Center Park around 1:00 a.m. Saturday, where around 100,000 people had gathered earlier for a fireworks display.
“She was found in a stroller in the middle of the park,” said Sonny Jackson of Denver police, KTVQ reported. “Unfortunately we waited, we waited, we tried to locate an adult who may be with her and nobody showed up.”
The girl was reportedly with her grandmother at the time, but the grandmother in question is yet to be found. Police said that the girl would remain in the custody of human services until more was known.
“To abandon a child is a crime, so we have a criminal investigation going on. But we also, more than that, we’re concerned, where is this person she was with?” Jackson added.
Police explained that the case was made more difficult because the girl was unable to say who her family was or where she was from.
At 1:00 p.m. Saturday, they posted two Twitter pictures in a bid to locate her relatives, after nobody had contacted authorities in the 12 hours since the girl had been found. This proved unsuccessful.
Authorities only tracked down the mother at around 8 p.m. that evening.
No further comment from the mother has been reported.
