Maryland police officers shot and killed an allegedly armed woman Aug. 1 after a stand-off.
Korryn Gaines, who was African-American, is the ninth black woman to be shot by police officers this year, according to The Guardian.
Officers went to an apartment in Randallstown, a suburb of Baltimore, to arrest Gaines for failing to appear in court over traffic offenses. When they arrived, officers said they found Gaines sitting on the floor pointing a gun at them.
“If you don’t leave, I’m going to kill you,” she reportedly told officers.
Gaines was reportedly holding her 5-year-old son in her arms at the time. Officers stated that they tried to convince her to surrender.
Gaines then allegedly fired at the police.
“We discharged one round at her,” said police chief James Johnson. “In return, she fired several rounds back at us. We fired again at her, striking and killing her.”
The boy injured a limb in the incident, but it remains unclear whether the bullets fired by the police or Gaines struck him.
Gaines’ boyfriend was arrested at the property after trying to escape with a 1-year-old child.
Video allegedly taken during the stand-off was uploaded to Gaines’ Instagram account. Gaines asked her son who was outside and he responded, “The police.” “And what are they trying to do?” she asked. “They’re trying to kill us,” the boy replied.
In a routine measure, the officers involved were placed on administrative leave. Their identities will be revealed 48 hours after the incident.
Gaines’ death came just three days after officers in Tennessee shot a 40-year-old woman accused of robbery July 29.
Homewood Police shot Amanda Bivens, but a male accomplice fled the scene.
Bivens was a mother to two daughters and a son. She reportedly had previous drug convictions.
“She had a rough past and started to work through it,” John Lecroy, who said Bivens was a sweet, dear friend, told AL.com. “She was a drug court graduate who ended up letting life take its toll on her and ended up relapsing.”
Officers fired a dozen bullets at Bivens after she drew her weapon outside a store. She was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other injuries.
