St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar called a news conference early Wednesday morning to address the police shooting of Antonio Martin.
Martin, 18, was shot by police at a gas station in Berkeley, Missouri, after he allegedly drew a firearm and pointed it at officers.
According the Daily Mail, Belmar told reporters that Martin “was known to law enforcement and had a record of assault and firearm offenses, all committed since he was 17.” Furthermore, police reportedly found a 9mm pistol with a defaced serial number – indicating the gun was stolen.
“It didn't have to end with him approaching the officer with his arm extended with a 9mm pistol in his hand,” Belmar told reporters.
The officer reportedly fired three shots at Martin; he did not have his body camera on at the time.
