Police Charge Man After Discovering His Elderly Mother Covered In Cockroaches

Authorities say they found a 74-year-old woman covered in cockroaches, wearing soiled clothes and living in deplorable housing conditions in her Flint, Michigan, home. The unnamed woman reportedly relied on her son, Mathew Christopher Simon, 36, for her medical care and daily needs and he has since been charged with second-degree vulnerable adult abuse.

Paramedics went to the woman’s home, which she shared with her son, on April 27, reports MLive. Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell said paramedics had to pass through debris cluttering the halls to reach the woman. She was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Second-degree vulnerable adult abuse is a felony in Michigan and punishable by up to four years in prison and a maximum of $5,000 fine.

This isn’t the first time Simon has been in trouble with the law. In 2004, he was convicted of attempted criminal sexual conduct in the second degree and sentenced to 180 days in jail and three years of probation. He’s still a registered sex offender and will be for life.
