Police Camera Records Ohio Traffic Stop Shooting, Death of James Gilkerson (Video)

A police cruiser camera caught on video an Ohio man’s deadly rampage after a routine traffic stop.

When police pulled over 42-year-old James Gilkerson after he ran through a stop sign, Gilkerson stepped out of his car with an AK-47 rifle and opened fire at the two officers. Gilkerson was killed in the exchange of gunfire, but luckily neither of the officers was seriously wounded.

Middlefield police said in a statement Friday that they still do not know what may have triggered Gilkerson’s attack, but in the video, he clearly yells out “kill me” to the officers between rounds.

“He got out of the vehicle, intending to kill my officers. We don’t know why he did it,” said Police Chief Arnold Stanko. Stanko also reported that prosecutors determined the shooting was justified on behalf of the officers.

Though Gilkerson’s motive remains unclear, the prosecutors did find disturbing pieces of evidence in his car that indicated he was perhaps planning an attack of some kind.

In addition to the gun, police officers also found eight 40-round magazines, and books titled “Backyard Rocketry: Converting Model Rockets Into Explosive Missiles,” “Advanced Close-range Gun Fighting” and “Homemade Detonators: How To Make Them.” They also found a black ski mask and black leather gloves.

“When you see what he had, how much ammunition he had, and how he reacted to being pulled over by the police, certainly I think you can speculate that these officers might have prevented a tragedy down the road,” Geauga County prosecutor Jim Flaiz told NBC affiliate WKYC.
