Former Police Cadet Kills Wife Then Shoots State Trooper

On Christmas Day, a former police cadet murdered his wife and critically injured a state trooper before he was shot dead.

Officers responding to reports of gunshots found the body of Kate Armand, 24, lying in the street outside the Oregon home of her 34-year-old husband, James Tylka.

Neighbors say they heard gunshots at around 10 p.m. “I heard what amounted to about five shots and a car driving off,” said neighbor Gary Bounds.

When troopers noticed Tylka driving near the scene of the crime, they chased the suspect. Tylka opened fire when they caught up with him, and was killed in the ensuing shootout.

Oregon State Police Trooper Nic Cederberg was shot multiple times by Tylka during the confrontation, receiving life-threatening injuries. Cederberg, who has been with the state police for seven years, was hospitalized in Portland, where he remains in critical condition.

The Oregon Police Departmen gave a statement to Oregon Live:

Nic received multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a Portland area hospital. Nic underwent surgery (Monday) morning and is in critical condition surrounded by his family and friends. ... We are also humbled by the support the community has given. Please keep Nic, his family and all of his law enforcement peers in your thoughts and prayers.

Armand’s sister added: “We are still in shock and devastated from last night's events. My heart is broken from the loss of my only sister,” she told KATU News. “Our thoughts are prayers are also with the wounded OSP officer and his family.”

Tylka had served as an unpaid cadet with Beaverton Police from 2004 and 2006, as part of a program for teens with an interest in law enforcement.

Tylka and Armand, who had one child together, were reportedly going through a divorce. They each had a child from previous marriages, and Tylka had also been involved in custody battles with his previous wife.

In September, Tylka's ex-wife filed temporary custody of their son on the grounds that he was at risk of abuse, claiming that he had been increasingly irrational and aggressive. She also alleged that Tylka had previously talked about committing suicide.
