Police arrested a ride operator Saturday for tampering with a ride at the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh, sending five people to the hospital.
Timothy Dwayne Tutterrow, 46, was charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
When riders went to disembark from the “Vortex” ride on Thursday night, the ride suddenly began moving again, throwing riders through the air.
The incident sent five people to the hospital after 9 p.m. Thursday. Three remained in the hospital this weekend, including Anthony Gorham, 29, Kisha Gorham, 39, and a 14-year-old juvenile.
"After inspection of the ride, we determined that it had been tampered with and critical safety devices were compromised," said Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison.
Tutterow, of Georgia, was employed through an independent ride contractor. The Vortex is the only ride owned and operated by the employer at the fair.
