Scott Henson, a former journalist and - ironically - criminal justice blogger, was picked up by police in Austin, Texas, for the heinous crime of walking his five-year-old granddaughter home.
The confusion seems to stem from the fact that Henson is white and his granddaughter, Ty, is black. A spokesman for the Austin Police Department, Corporal Anthony Hipolito confirms that Henson was taken into custody on February 10, and claims that police were searching for a kidnapped black child that fit Ty's description.
Henson explains in a blog article describing the incident that Ty's mother is his goddaughter and that he and is wife often find themselves tasked with various childcare duties, according to the NY Daily News.
The following is an excerpt taken from Henson's blog:
"The officers got out with tasers drawn demanding I raise my hands and step away from the child. I complied, and they roughly cuffed me, jerking my arms up behind me needlessly.
"Meanwhile, Ty edged up the hill away from the officers, crying...for quite a while nobody seemed too interested in verifying my story."
Henson was eventually released when Police confirmed Ty's identity with a phone call to the girl's mother.
