A potential airline disaster was averted Monday night as a plane made a successful belly landing at Newark-Liberty Airport.
Local television stations report the Atlanta to Newark Shuttle America flight had problems with its nose gear, so it had to land without the benefit if its front tires. The runway was sprayed with fire retardant so that none of the sparks from the belly landing would start a fire in the plane.
The plane with at least 68 passengers and four crew members landed safely at around 6:40pm Eastern time. No one was hurt.
