A small plane crashed and landed on a Florida beach Sunday, killing a man and injuring his 9-year-old daughter, reports Huffington Post.
The father, Ommy Irizarry, 36, and his daughter, Oceana, were visiting the Gulf Coast city of Venice, Florida from their home in Georgia when they were suddenly hit by the single-engine Piper Cherokee. Oceana was critically injured and airlifted to All Children’s Hospital in Tampa. Irizarry died, according to Sarasota County’s Sheriff’s spokeswoman Wendy Rose.
The incident took place on Caspersen Beach, where witnesses say they didn’t hear the plane approaching, reports USA Today.
The pilot of the plane, Karl Kokomoor, reportedly placed a distress call to Venice airport at about 2:45 p.m. The pilot and his 60-year-old passenger, David Theen, who are both from Florida, were rescued and were not injured in the crash landing.
The victim’s family members are reportedly “traumatized” and sought treatment at a Venice hospital.
