Pitt Bull Attack Leaves Boy, 7, in Critical Condition

Children playing at Treat Park in Savannah, GA, had to scramble up on the slide and other exercise equipment to escape attack by two pit bulls on Tuesday, June 21, 2011.   But, seven-year-old Javon Roberson was in a swing and could not get away.

The dogs pulled Javon off the swing and began biting his face and legs, according to reports.  One of them then went after the other children, while the smaller of the two dogs continued an attack on Javon so intense and ferocious that witnesses had to beat the dog to unconsciousness with bricks to release her teeth and jaws from their grip on the child’s head and face. The little boy is reported to be in critical condition at Memorial University Medical Center,

WSAV-TV News spoke with a nearby resident, Wallingford Boland, who heard the screams and ran down with his gun.  He fired at the second dog to try to keep it away from  the children. "It was the most traumatic experience of my life,” the distraught man said. Boland thought he nicked the second dog but said the dog seemed unfazed and ran from the park.  A heart wrenching interview with Boland shows the grief of witnessing this attack. http://www2.wsav.com/news/2011/jun/22/12/child-attacked-search-pit-bull-continues-ar-2012002/

The second, larger pit bull, was later shot with a tranquilizer gun by  a Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Animal Control officer, according to reports, but it avoided capture by running into a nearby woods. Officers located the dog around 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday in the same area and are holding her in quarantine for ten days.

The pit bull involved in the attack on Javon was euthanized and is being checked by the Chatham County Environmental Health Department for rabies.  There were no identifying tags on either dog and police report they are seeking the owner, who may face charges, according to the 2WSAV.com report. http://www2.wsav.com/news/2011/jun/22/12/child-attacked-search-pit-bull-continues-ar-2012002/
