A 13-year-old boy who was home alone was awakened by the family dog as his Indianapolis home began filling with smoke.
Nick Lamb, who was born deaf, wasn’t wearing his hearing aids while he slept, so his 2-year-old pit bull Ace licked his face until he woke up.
"I was like, 'Stop it! What? You want to be fed?'" Lamb recalled. "I thought he wanted to be fed or go outside."
He was shocked to find the home was on fire. He covered his nose and mouth with his T-shirt, darted out the back door with Ace and called 911.
"It's amazing, because if he wouldn't have been there, he probably wouldn't have even woke up,” said his mother Lindsay Bernard.
The family cat Pixie, who was found inside the home, is being treated for smoke inhalation and is expected to recover.
"(Lamb) told firefighters that this was the first summer he was old enough to stay home alone and was excited to have reached that milestone," Indianapolis Fire Department Capt. Rita Reith said in a news release. "He had just returned from summer camp on Sunday."
The charred home has about $175,000 in damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
