A Frontier Airlines pilot whose Denver-bound flight was diverted due to storms treated hungry passengers to pizza while they sat on the tarmac for several hours.
Frontier Flight 719 left Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport one hour behind schedule Monday at 7:40 p.m. Due to bad weather, it was forced to circle western Nebraska and then land at Cheyenne Regional Airport in Wyoming.
The pilot, whose name was not released, knew the 160 passengers on board were likely hot, tired and hungry.
Domino’s Pizza manager Andrew Richie says he got a call around 10 p.m. He was just about to send his employees home.
"I put my hand over the phone and I said: 'Guys, you're coming back,'" Ritchie told The Associated Press.
The pilot told passengers hot food was on the way.
"He said 'Ladies and gentleman, Frontier Airlines is known for being one of the cheapest airlines in the U.S., but your captain is not cheap. I just ordered pizza for the entire plane,’” passenger Logan Marie Torres told KDVR.
Ritchie’s team made about 35 pizzas and delivered them in 30 minutes – setting a new store record.
"Actually, they were super excited. They had a blast. It was a challenge," he said. "It was definitely one of those 'challenge accepted' moments in time."
The flight reportedly left around 10:30 p.m., shortly after the pizzas were delivered. It arrived at Denver International Airport just after midnight, five hours behind schedule.
