Police officers found the decapitated bodies of a woman and two dogs inside a North Phoenix apartment, where the suspect allegedly amputated his arm and gouged out one of his eyes, according to the NY Daily News.
A concerned friend, who had not heard from the unidentified 43-year-old suspect in 24 hours, stopped by the house on Saturday to check in. The man opened the door, naked and missing his right eye and left arm, revealing the grisly crime scene inside, according to the neighbor. The neighbor backed away and promptly called 911 that morning.
“He had been severely injured. It appears he had self-amputated his left arm from below the elbow,” said Sgt. Trent Crump.
Officers came to the home in the 5100 block of North 13th place, where they found the suspect outside and the decapitated bodies of two dogs and 49-year-old Trina Heisch inside, who family members told police was married to the suspect, reports AZ Central.
"These two have a history of a domestic-violence relationship," Crump said.
The suspect, who authorities say has a history of mental health problems, was arrested in 2003 on charges of attempting to kill a family member. Heisch was arrested in March for allegedly trying to stab her husband, according to police.
Neighbors had frequently called 911 to complain about alleged drug use in the residence and the large number of people who stopped by at night, notes NY Daily News.
When they found the naked, bleeding man, officials immediately took the suspect to a hospital, where he underwent surgery for his injuries. Authorities will not publicly identify him until he is booked in jail.
"It was an absolutely horrific scene," Crump said, according to AZ Central.
The suspect told police that he had killed three family members, but investigators are unclear if he was referring to the three known decapitations or additional murders, so they are checking in on all known family members as of Sunday.
