Philip Chism Raped, Robbed Math Teacher Before Murder, DA Says

The 14-year-old indicted on first degree murder charges in the death of a Danvers, Mass., math teacher Colleen Ritzer was also charged with aggravated rape and armed robbery.

Prosecutors say Philip Chism was armed with a box cutter, and the aggravated rape charge alleges he assaulted Ritzer, 24, with an object.

"The indictments ... detail horrific and unspeakable acts," said Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

Ritzer was robbed of credit cards, her iPhone, and her underwear.

Chism was charged as a youthful offender, but prosecutors say they will try to join the rape and robbery charges with the murder case in Superior Court, CNN reported.

"This is the first step in a long process to secure justice for Ms. Ritzer and her family," Blodgett said.

Ritzer was known for being an inspirational, vibrant young algebra teacher.

"She was happy," said Jen Berger, Ritzer's best friend. "I don't even know what the world is like without her. It's a scary thought."

She was working towards a master’s degree from Salem State University.

"We are devastated and heartbroken by the details of the horrific circumstances surrounding the death of our beautiful daughter and sister, Colleen," the Ritzer family said in a statement.

The exact cause of Ritzer’s death has not been ruled, according to the Associated Press.

Chism pleaded not guilty to the murder charge, which he faces as an adult.

A source close to the investigation told CNN, that Ritzer used a regular girls bathroom at the school because a faculty bathroom was locked. Chism allegedly followed her into the bathroom.

Officials say Ritzer was punched several times before she was killed. Her body was put into a recycling bin and the bin was dumped in the woods behind the school.

Chism then changed his clothes, went to Wendy’s and then saw a movie, the source told CNN.
