A Duncan, Oklahoma, toddler was killed by a pit bull just five days after her father bought the dog as a pet.
Jason Dodge told KFOR that his 3-year-old daughter, Rylee, was at his home on the day in question while he went to visit his brother. The toddler stayed with her grandmother, and Dodge was gone for just 20 minutes when his mother called him.
"I got the phone call, you know, 'Your daughter and the dog,' and that’s all I heard and I rushed here as fast as I can," he said.
"When I came in the house, my mom was laying on the dog and she was just all bloody. I mean she was trying her best to get the dog off my daughter. My daughter was just there laying on the bed, just limp. My mom was right there when it happened. There is literally blood all through the house. And, that’s why I didn’t even come back last night because it’s so bad."
Dodge picked up his daughter and was going to rush her to the hospital, but an ambulance arrived as he was taking her outside.
"She was just so chewed up, I mean there’s just no coming back from that. The doctors did everything they could. They tried to give her blood and everything, and she’d just passed. There’s nothing they could do, absolutely nothing," he said.
Five days earlier, Dodge took his son to a friend's house to meet the pit bull and make sure it was friendly enough to be around his kids.
"It loved him, gave him a hug and licked him on the face and everything. Brought him here, my son come outside all day long and play with him, didn’t do nothing to him," he said.
While Dodge was at his brother's house, his daughter opened the front door to play with the dog -- who was fenced in -- and was immediately attacked. A police officer later shot and killed the dog.
"He went and got his shotgun. I was like kill this dog, you know, shoot it down or I will. And, he did. He shot it in the backyard," Dodge said. The man's mother wasn't bitten by the dog but went to the hospital anyway.
"She actually pulled her arm out of the socket by holding the dog down so long until I got home. She had to check herself in the hospital herself because her arm was so messed up from holding the dog down too long. She couldn’t breathe, she couldn’t, I mean she had no stamina whatsoever. She couldn’t even get up," Dodge said.
In a Facebook post following his daughter's death, Dodge expressed his devastation over what happened.
"I'm so sorry this happened to you baby girl. I know I promised you I'd never let anything happen to you and I failed at it. I will always love you, that's a promise. I'll never let up! Miss you baby girl you're my everything baby girl. Daddy really wishes you was here!! I don't know what I'm going to do without that beautiful smile and my kisses an hugs. Love you, R.IP. Rylee Marie," the post read, Daily Mail reported.
