Robert Downey Jr.'s Photo Causes Mass Confusion (Photos)

Robert Downey Jr. might not appear in as many controversial photos as he used to back in his wilder days, but an 8-year-old paparazzi photo of him spending quality time with his family and friends has resurfaced and caused quite a stir, as people noticed a hilariously puzzling detail in the background (photo below).

It all started on May 24, 2009, when the "Iron Man" star and a few other people, including "The Hills" actress and TV personality Kristin Cavallari and Downey's wife, Susan, were spotted at a beach house in Malibu.

At first glance, it seems like a pretty normal photo of five people hanging out in a back yard, so nobody thought much of it at the time.

That all changed on Feb. 15, when radio host Jamie East posted the photo on Twitter along with a burning question that a lot of people would like answered: "WTF is Robert Downey Jr's dog doing?"

Take a closer look at the dog in the background:

Who does that pair of legs belong to? More importantly, what is the dog doing with them, and why does it look so happy?

We might never know. The mystery is nowhere near solved, sadly, although a large number of Twitter users have concluded that the critter is doing something wildly inappropriate.

The puns were strong in this post. With nearly 24,000 retweets as of Feb. 16, everybody was weighing in.

More importantly, we don't even have an idea as to whom the dog belongs. According to a 2010 report from People magazine, Downey did not have a dog then, as he was moving around too much. At the time, Downey almost adopted his French bulldog co-star, Sunny, from the movie "Due Date," and even spoke to the set's dog handler about it. But ultimately he decided that it wasn't the right time, as he was not "settled" enough.

In other words, we might be scratching our heads over this one for a long time.
