Some on social media are furious at Bill Maher's response to President Donald Trump's acknowledgement of a Navy SEAL widow during his speech to Congress.
Independent Journal Review reports that Maher visited Chris Matthews' show on MSNBC in the wake of the speech to analyze Trump's performance. It seems that a large portion of society believes Trump delivered one of his best speeches -- including some Democrats, who called Trump "presidential" for the first time.
But Matthews and Maher had a different take. Matthews called the moment where the pPresident praised the extended applause for deceased Navy SEAL Ryan Owens wife, Carryn, "grotesque."
And Maher agreed, adding, "I wasn't crazy about the response to that. I wish she hadn't allowed herself to be used as his prop like that. And I don't see any great courage here. Where is the courage? Who wouldn't stand and applaud for a war widow?"
Some social media users have pointed out in response to Maher's question that many Democrats in Congress refused to stand or applaud for Carryn, including Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida.
Filmmakers Michael Moore and Rob Reiner followed Maher on the show, and each claimed that Trump had "used" the SEAL's widow, calling the incident "disgraceful."
A large number of Facebook users have chimed in with their own thoughts on the matter.
One user wrote: "You're a special kind of slime when you choose to call a widow whose husband is being honored for SACRIFICING HIS LIFE a prop. What an a**hat! Presidents honor sports champions, scholars, etc...with not a word...and Maher dares insult this grieving widow?! Her husband's sacrifice and her sacrifice of standing by a man whose job could, and did, leave her a single mother deserves every moment of recognition and ovation!"
Another said: "not surprised..sour grapes that's all I can say...they are like spoiled rotten brats who didn't get their way..all the Democrats that night looked like they were all sucking on lemons...lol"
One commented: "She wanted to have her husband honored for his ultimate sacrifice. Give her credit instead of accusing her of being a prop. Evidently you do not remember Obama having a serviceman at one of his joint speeches. Just go away, if you can't say something positive don't open your mouth. You are another Hollywood person the majority of people don't respect or want to hear your opinion."
