A pack of five of her own pet pit bulls killed 50-year-old Carmen Ramos in her home on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, in Hunting Park, a neighborhood in North Philadelphia, PA.
In a morbid similarity to the recent death of Dara Lapora in Pacifica, Calif., Carmen Ramos’ bloody body was found in the living room by her husband when he came home from work.
Jose Alvarez, 55, said he came in to discover his wife being attacked by their five pit bulls in their home on W. Carey Street around 6:30 p.m., according to police.
When officers arrived, the bloody living room was in disarray and it appeared the woman had struggled and tried to protect herself from the brutal attack. They got the dogs upstairs, but it was too late to save the victim.
Carmen Ramos was declared dead at 6:45 p.m.
In the August 11 attack in California, Dara Lapora, an activist with BAD RAP (Bay Area Dog Lovers Responsible About Pit Bulls), was killed by her own two-year-old male pit bull, which she raised from a puppy. http://www.opposingviews.com/i/society/animal-rights/pit-bull-mauls-and-kills-pregnant-california-woman-darla-napora and http://www.opposingviews.com/i/society/animal-rights/husband-forgives-pit-bull-killing-pregnant-wife-darla-napora
Carmen Ramos died from multiple canine bites, according to the Medical Examiner’s report, which said she suffered severe trauma to her head, face and legs.
Although the Medical Examiner ruled the death was accidental, originally the case was investigated as a homicide, “…and the woman’s husband and another man were taken in for questioning,” FoxNews.com reports. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/08/31/philly-husband-says-wife-was-mauled-to-death-by-dogs/#ixzz1WmCn9YOs
According to NBC News, neighbors said the dogs are vicious and had been terrorizing the neighborhood. “The dogs often got loose and they just run around, everyone needs to run into their homes," neighbor Carmen Gonzolez told NBC Philadelphia. http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/weird/128717748.html
Neighbors also reported that the dogs had bitten a man last week and were taken away by animal control on Friday, August 26. They were returned to the home earlier this week and removed again on Tuesday--after Carmen Ramos death. http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/philadelphia-woman-fatally-mauled-by-her-own-pit-bulls-neighbors-report-previous-attacks/2011/09/01/gIQAK6ELvJ_story.html
