Pennsylvania Bridal Boutique Owners Deny Service to Lesbians, Receive Threats

The owners of a Pennsylvania bridal shop are claiming they were harassed and threatened after they refused to work for a lesbian couple because of their Christian beliefs.

Victoria and Thomas Miller, who run W.W. Bridal Boutique in Bloomsberg, said they declined to make dresses for two lesbians and several men because they believe marriage should be between a man and a woman, according to CNS News.

“We had to decide whether or not our conscience and faith would allow us to participate in...gay and lesbian weddings,” Miller said. “To be clear, our objection is not at all directed to gays or lesbians as individuals.  We will sell our products to gay individuals.  It is our participation in the marital process between same sex couples which we concluded to be a violation of a sacred tenet of our religious faith, which is that a marriage is a commitment between a male and a female.”

Al Luschas, the Millers’ attorney, said the Millers have received threats after denying their services and have experienced “very vicious attacks across the board.”

They received voicemails saying “I hope you get raped” and “I hope your children get raped” and other violent threats, Luschas said.

He added that the Millers’ website was also hacked by an unknown group, which posted that the bridal boutique was out of business and caused confusion among customers who had already ordered dresses from the shop.

“Two local news stations then broadcast that they had gone out of business, so they were fielding frantic calls from girls who had ordered wedding dresses. It’s been a difficult time for these people,” he said.

A Facebook user named G. Andrea Shay posted that she had tried to order two wedding dresses from the shop, but was told that she would not be served because “they currently do not service same sex couples and it’s just not something they do,” according to Facebook.

Shay also wrote that the shop was “strange and rude.”

Bloomsberg residents have recently met to discuss making discrimination against lesbian and gay couples illegal.
