After being discharged from a psychological unit, 23-year-old Jennifer Manuel was arrested on charges of murdering her 7-month-old son, Constantine Laizure. Manuel, from Nashville, Tennessee, is facing first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse charges.
Manuel’s husband, 28-year-old Kenneth Laizure, is also accused of killing Constantine on May 19, reports The Tennessean.
The day before the baby died, authorities received a call for help from an unidentified party. When first reponders arrived, Constantine was in cardiac arrest and police said they believe the baby was left with a blanket and a pillow over his face for about an hour "in an effort to silence his crying," according to a news release from the police. The child was taken by ambulance to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. Constantine later died.
The news release added that "bruises and marks of injuries were found on the child's body." Police also said the baby had fractured ribs in various stages of healing.
Police added that they believe both parents participated in abusing Constantine, reports WKRN.
The couple’s 3-year-old daughter was found severely malnourished and is now in protective custody.
Laizure was arrested on May 21 and is being held in jail in lieu of a $750,000 bond. Manuel remains in custody and her bail is set $600,000.
