Oscar Pistorius Charged with Murder in Reeva Steenkamp's Death

Oscar Pistorius was formally charged with one count of murder on Friday for his role in the Valentine’s Day death of his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

According to USA Today, Pistorius held his head in his hands and openly cried during the court proceedings. Prosecutors said they would pursue a charge of premeditated murder against the Olympian.

Premeditated murder is a more serious charge than murder. Steenkamp was shot four times, and officers found a 9 mm pistol at the scene of the crime.

Pistorius’ arrest has sent shock waves across South Africa, and many people with ties to the situation have taken to social media to get their opinions heard.

Trish Taylor, mother of Pistorius' ex-girlfriend Samantha Taylor, posted on Facebook, “I'm so glad Sammy is safe and out of the clutches of that man.”

Not everyone is so quick to assume that the “Blade Runner” is guilty. At least one of Pistrorius’ ex-girlfriends, Jenna Edkins, has opted to defend him.

“All I am saying is let him speak, let his side be heard without jumping to conclusions,” Edkins tweeted. “I have dated Oscar on and off for 5 YEARS, NOT ONCE has he EVER lifted a finger to me or made me fear for my life.” She offered her love and support to Pistorius and his family.

Pistorius' bail hearing will be held next week. The 26-year-old will be held at a police station in Pretoria until then. Authorities have said they oppose the granting of bail.

Pistorius made Olympic history when he became the first double-amputee track athlete to compete at the games. He didn't win a medal, but his story was an inspiration to many. If the accusations against him prove to be true, it would be a huge disappointment to his many fans and well-wishers around the world.
