On the second day of Oscar Pistorius' bail hearing, the court heard that he allegedly shot his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp dead after “non-stop” arguing. Those in the courtroom also learned that boxes of steroids, testosterone and needles were found at the home of the 26-year-old Olympian.
Pistorius is facing the charge of premeditated murder.
Prosecutors revealed that the bullets which struck Steenkamp hit the right side of her head, her right elbow - which resulted in a broken arm - and her hip.
According to The Daily Mail, Pistorius looked distraught and sobbed with his head lowered as those details were exposed to the packed courtroom.
Pistorius has said that it was dark when he shot Steenkamp, but police say they have a witness who saw the lights on in the athlete’s home. The witness also claims to have heard gunshots, heard a female screaming and then listened as more shots rang out.
There still has not been a decision as to whether Pistorius, who last year became the first double-amputee track athlete to run at the Olympic Games, will be granted bail. He will spend another night in jail - his seventh - before the hearing begins again in the morning.
During his account of what occurred during the Valentine’s Day killing, “Blade Runner” said: “I fired shots through the bathroom door. It dawned on me it could be Reeva in there. I broke the door open with a cricket bat. She was alive. I tried to revive her.”
Chief Investigative Officer Hilton Botha said he arrived at Pistorius’ house at about 4:15 a.m. last Thursday. When he arrived on the scene, the 29-year-old Steenkamp had already been declared dead. “She had on white shorts and a black vest,” Botha said. “She was covered in towels.”
One detail of the case that is in contention is whether Pistorius was wearing his prosthetic legs at the time of the shooting. The athlete says he shot through the toilet cubicle door while on his stumps. Botha said he thinks the bullets were fired down. This would suggest that Pistorius was wearing his prosthetic legs when the shots were discharged.
