Oregon Teen Saves Friend From Drunken Driver, Gets Hit Instead

An Oregon teenager saved the life of his best friend when he pushed her to safety and was hit by a truck on Tuesday.

Kameron Howell-Meeker, 15, and Ellie Fielder, 17, were walking to meet a few friends Tuesday evening when a truck swerved toward them. To save Fielder, Howell-Meeker pushed her out of the way and took the blow himself.

“He did like three cartwheels in the air and landed flat on his stomach and face and is covered in road rash,” Fielder said.

Howell-Meeker was released from the hospital Thursday, but will still need surgery. He suffered a broken pelvis, torn ligaments and a compressed spine. Although doctors suspect he will be able to walk again in a month, it may take up to a year.

The two friends originally met this school year as new students. Now, Fielder believes they have formed a life-long bond.

“I’d be dead,” Fielder said. “He’s going to be my best friend for the rest of my life.”

The truck driver, Corey Brownlee, was arrested and charged with a DUI and assault.
