Open Carry Texas Activists Hold Armed Rally Outside Target

Members of the pro-gun group Open Carry Texas demonstrated in a parking lot outside a Target store in Irving, Tx., on Saturday.

Open Carry Texas, which was armed with assault weapons, was trying to draw attention to a Texas law that allows the open carry of long guns, but not handguns.

"Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America confirmed with a Target manager that the store knew in advance that the open carry rally would take place, and Target did nothing to stop it," the gun control group Moms Demand Action said in a statement to Talking Points Memo.

Moms Demand Action has asked Target to ban guns inside its stores, but the retail chain has deferred to local, state and federal laws instead.

"As we have previously shared, the safety and security of our guests and team members is our top priority and we follow all local, state and federal laws," Target spokesperson Molly Snyder told Mother Jones. "We respect the rights of our guests to express their opinions and we will continue to listen and take their feedback seriously."

"Thank you, Target, for not taking a position and allowing state law to dictate policy," Open Carry Texas recently posted on its Facebook page. "We in Open Carry Texas will continue to refrain from taking long arms into your businesses, but will continue spending our money there."
