The son of MMA fighter Marcus Kowal died from injuries after the child was hit by a drunk driver.

The incident occurred on Sept. 3. Liam Kowal, who was only 15 months old, was being pushed in his stroller by his 15-year-old aunt in Hawthorne, California, when they were struck by a vehicle that was being driven by a 72-year-old woman, CNN reported.

The driver fled the scene, but a witness followed the vehicle and blocked it from moving until police arrived. Authorities said the driver was drunk.

Marcus took to Facebook to write about the incident.

"He tried to fight so hard. He even died at one point but they brought him back," Marcus wrote. "He's a little fighter. His heart is still beating but his brain is no longer working.

"Our hearts are broken and there's a void in my soul but we will get through this."

On Sept. 5, Marcus and Liam’s mother, Mishel Eder, made the decision to pull their son’s life support and donate his organs.

“This isn't easy to write but Liam is going to donate his organs, so that his little heart can make another child live and another set of parents not have to go through what we have to,” Marcus wrote in another Facebook post. “We were told that we can donate to someone we know. Therefore, I am writing this post to ask if there is a child out there we know that needs a heart or any other organ.

“It hurts to write this but Liam loved to share and the person we were going to raise him to be would love to help someone else. So anyone we know, or someone you know, inbox me please.”

Liam’s aunt suffered leg injuries, but is in stable condition. Hawthorne Police said the driver has been charged with felony hit and run and felony drunk driving.

The family set up a GoFundMe account. The page has raised more than $112,000 in just two days.

“Our family will never be the same. But Liam will live on,” Eder wrote in the page’s description. “When you're feeling sad please think of his smile.”
