A 16-year-old Harlem boy has died after getting shot in the head outside of a public housing building.
Police said Juwan "Chico" Tavarez died from his injuries after suffering a gunshot wound to the head outside of the Jefferson Houses in East Harlem on March 25, according to PIX11.
After the shooting, which a witness said was random, Juwan was taken to Harlem Hospital in critical condition, thew New York Daily News reports. He was pronounced dead on the night of March 27.
“He’s a young kid,” Juwan’s sister, who was not identified by name, told the New York Daily News. “This is too much.”
Francia Tavarez, Juwan’s foster mother since he was 1 year old, said Juwan was a good student and avoided gang activity.
“He comes from love, not hate,” Francia said. “I am still in shock … I can’t get over it. I can’t get over it.”
As of March 28, there have been no arrests in the case and the investigation is ongoing. Residents reportedly told PIX11 that they are pretty sure they know who shot and killed Juwan but would not elaborate.
