Police: 15-Year-Old Boy Accidentally Shoots, Kills Friend

A Brooklyn, New York, teen accidentally shot and killed his friend while the two were playing a video game, police said.

On Feb. 11, the victim, 16-year-old Denzel Nash, was playing Madden NFL with his 15-year-old friend when the friend got a touchdown, the New York Daily News reported. He celebrated the touchdown by pulling out a gun and waving it around. He then reportedly shot Nash in the face.

The young teen was charged with manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon. He reportedly told police that the shooting was an accident.

Police responded to a 911 call about the shooting and saw two men leaving the apartment building where it took place. They brought the men back to the scene of the crime, where they fund Nash with a gunshot wound to the face. Nash was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"This is an unfortunate situation," Tamika White, who lives in the apartment building where the shooting took place, told the Daily News. "It could be one of my kids. I feel sad. My heart goes out to the parents. ... That could happen to anybody’s child.”

A GoFundMe page was subsequently launched to help Nash's family with funeral costs.

"I write this now as one of his many teachers who are heartbroken and sickened over this loss; Denzel was a junior at our high school, a former member of the soccer team, and a beloved friend to much of the student body," Angela Meloni, who launched the page, wrote.

"In the aftermath of this tragedy, there are many unexpected expenses that his family is currently incurring. As his teachers, friends, family, or even well-meaning strangers, we want to come together to help give Denzel the proper farewell and burial that we all know he deserves."

Police are investigating where the teen suspect got the gun, the Daily News notes.
