Oklahoma Teacher Gave Failing Student A's After Sleeping With Him, Police Say

An English teacher in Oklahoma is charged with second-degree rape for allegedly carrying on a sexual relationship with a student.

Kalyn Darby Thompson, 25, allegedly gave her 18-year-old student at Kellyville High School a 98 percent on his exam after he’d been failing the course earlier in the year.

The relationship allegedly began in December 2013. Police say she slept with the student twice, once at a nearby lake and another time at a Tulsa hotel.

Under Oklahoma law, a sexual relationship between teacher and student is not considered consensual because a teacher is seen as an “authority figure” until the student is at least 20 years old, KJRH-TV reported.

Thompson resigned in mid-April, after reportedly learning that officials were investigating her actions.

Upon resignation, she told school officials that she and the student had been texting and “some of those texts were sexual in nature.”

“You send your kid to small town schools thinking they’re going to get a better education because there’s better one-on-one," Kellyville parent Michael Sullivan told KJRH-TV. "You don’t expect to hear about a teacher messing with a student."

Thompson is being held at Creek County Jail in lieu of $35,000 bond.
