An Ohio Emergency Department doctor allegedly killed a pregnant woman that he met via Craigslist.com by injecting her with a lethal dose of heroin. After the woman died, the doctor reportedly did “inhumane” things to her corpse.
Pakistani-born Dr. Ali Salim, 44, is accused of raping and killing the 23-year-old Deanna Ballman last summer.
The body was discovered in the backseat of her car parked in the woods outside of New Albany on Aug. 1.
The mother of two was nine months pregnant. Ballman’s friends say she visited the New Albany-based Salim in response to a want ad for a house cleaner. However, other reports suggest she was responding to an ad for models from Salim, who reportedly had an "obsession" with photographing young women.
Salim pleaded not guilty on Thursday, in front of Delaware County Judge Duncan Whitney, to two counts of murder. He was charged with two counts for the deaths of both Ballman and her unborn baby.
Salim denies the charges, including those of rape, felonious assault, corrupting another with drugs, kidnapping, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse.
Sources said Salim, who has been at the center of the investigation into Ballman’s death for several months, could be released on $1 million bail as soon as Friday. If released, he will be placed under house arrest until his trial is expected to begin, sometime in early May.
Prosecutors say such an early release could be "a risk" as Salim could absolutely pose a threat to other women.
They also fear he may skip town back to Pakistan, where he lived until he was in his early 20s.
Toxicology reports reveal that Ballman, who died from a heroin overdose, also had morphine and codeine in her blood at the time of death.
Salim graduated from Pakistan’s King Edward Medical College in 1993 and was working at a health care facility in Knox County. He was suspended from his position once the case against him became public.
