Police in Florida have issued a warning about a clothing hook that contains a hidden camera, and is being used as a spying device.
Authorities said the device has been found on walls in three public restrooms around the state, the Daily Mail reported. The clothing hook camera has also been found in dressing rooms and hotel rooms.
The device appears to be just another clothing hook at first glance. But upon closer inspection, a miniature camera can be found in a tiny hole at the top of the plastic. The device is commonly used to spy on people getting undressed.
Police are asking the public to stay away from hooks that look like this. They are also asking for people to report them if they see them in public restrooms or dressing rooms.
Officials are also warning business owners to monitor their property.
"Anyone who has a public restroom on their property needs to check them closely," Florida Keys sheriff said at the time, according to the Daily Mail. "If you find anything suspicious you think might contain a hidden camera, don't touch it. Call us right away and we will respond.
"Keep in mind, though, that these are very small cameras that can be mounted in many locations and hidden in many seemingly every-day items."
The Spy Finder can cost anywhere between $50 to $80, WBBH reported. They are sold as "home security devices."
The news station checked four different gas stations in the area, but did not find hidden cameras in any of the restrooms. However, private investigator Carrie Kerskie said the cameras are out there.
"Nowadays, with the advances in technology, all you need to do is insert a MicroSD card," Kerskie told WBBH. "The battery life for these coat hooks, I looked it up, is two hours. Then, you just take it out, pop it in the computer, and you have all your images.
"It's real simple and easy. They just walk in, hang it up, walk out, go back a few hours later and take it off."
Kerskie added that the device could be used for good, especially for women who live alone. Still, she said business owners need to be careful.
"I do recommend it if you're a woman and you're living alone or even a girl in college dorms," Kerskie said. "They have been found in those places."
"If you own an establishment with a dressing room or public restrooms, it's a good idea to go in there periodically and check yourself," Kerskie added. "That way, you're not the one who is on the six o'clock news saying there was a camera found in your establishment."
