While Kimberly Rossler was breast-feeding her 3-week-old son, James, sherriff’s deputies came to her house in Mobile, Alabama, and took him away, WECT 6 reports.
“They let me finish breast-feeding him, and I put him in his car seat, as I screamed and cried and watched them take my child away, with no answers whatsoever," Rossler told WECT 6.
Early in her pregnancy, Rossler had considered giving up her child for adoption through Adoption Rocks, which set her up with prospective adoptive mother Kate Sharp. After Rossler sought counseling and decided that she could confidently parent her son, she had a change of heart and decided that she would keep the baby.
"I tried to tell [adoption attorney Donna Ames] numerous times, and she just brushed it off like this was nothing, like this happens," Rossler said.
All parties had a verbal agreement that Rossler would keep the baby, but nobody told her she needed to fill out additional paperwork.
"I didn't think there was any need to sign anything, because [Ames] told me that paperwork was not final until after he was born," she said.
When she first told Sharp she would keep the baby, Sharp understood and even apologized that Ames had been rude to Rossler.
Rossler, who had recently applied for and received Medicaid, went into labor and did not contact anybody tied to the adoption, noted The Huffington Post.
“I am devastated but I understand, let me know if you have a change of heart,” Sharp texted Rossler in the hospital, reports The Huffington Post.
Later, Sharp apparently went to a judge and requested custody of the baby, alleging endangerment and mental instability. Judge Brown, who signed the order to remove James from Rossler's custody, told The Huffington Post he would never have authorized the baby’s removal had he known it was an adoption, not a rescue.
Rossler has not seen James for weeks. All she wants is to have him back, she told WECT 6.
"I finally had peace in my life, that I had this unconditional love I have always wanted, and to know that my child has been taken from me, and not even knowing what is going on with him,” she said.
