A pregnant Tennessee woman was arrested for murder in the death of her infant son, police said in a news release.
Smyrna Police Department officers arrested Brittany Marie Wiest in connection with the death of her son after a nearly year-long investigation, the Daily News Journal reported.
Police originally responded to Wiest’s apartment on April 8, 2015, after receiving a report of an unresponsive infant in the home. Wiest was reportedly living in the apartment with her boyfriend, Michael Withers. They were both home at the time.
Upon arrival, police found 59-day-old Anakin Leroy-Michael Wiest dead. The body appeared to be extremely underweight and malnourished.
The child’s body was sent to the Forensic Medical Examiner's Office in Nashville for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, WGNS reported. The examiner’s report indicated the infant’s death was the result of starvation and dehydration, and the death was ultimately ruled a homicide.
Detective Rick Hall submitted the findings to a Rutherford County grand jury, who returned indictments for charges of aggravated child abuse, aggravated child neglect and felony murder.
Wiest was reportedly 24 weeks pregnant with another child.
She was placed in police custody on $100,000 bond.
