Officer Aiming For Pit Bull Accidentally Shoots Mother Of Murder Victim In The Leg

A St. Louis, Missouri, mother of a double homicide victim was accidentally shot in the leg when a police officer fired at her dog and struck her instead.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson announced that on Oct. 29, at the request of the Children’s Division of the Missouri Department of Social Services, at least three officers went to the 42-year-old woman’s home with social workers to remove a 1-year-old from the residence, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Although Dotson didn't identify the woman, a police source reportedly told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that she is the mother of 23-year-old James Cobb, who was found dead inside a car with Haris Hajdarevic, 22, following a double shooting the night before in the same location.

One officer and the social workers were making their way inside the woman’s home when a pit bull allegedly jumped a waist-high barricade that was keeping it confined to the kitchen. The dog ran toward the officer and the social workers, and the officer fired one shot at the dog.

The bullet struck the woman in the leg as she was trying to restrain the dog.

Dotson said the woman’s injuries were minor and non-life threatening, KSDK reports.

The incident is under investigation.

"When the investigation is done, the Force Investigative Unit will hand that to the Circuit Attorney's office," Dotson said. "And they'll review the case in an independent fashion to determine if there are any charges, or if there was any wrongdoing."

The officer who fired the shot has been on the force for about three and a half years. He will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation, as is standard procedure following shootings, Dotson said.

The dog has been taken by animal control but will be returned to the family. It reportedly belonged to the woman’s deceased son and she brought it to her home after his death.
