A Florida woman was arrested after she sat on a 9-year-old relative who died as a result.
Police responded to a cardiac arrest call on Oct. 14 in Pensacola, Florida, the Daily Mail reported. There, they found 9-year-old Dericka Lindsay unresponsive.
The young girl was transported to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead. Veronica Green Posey, 64, told police she had sat on Dericka "for being out of control."
According to the police report, Dericka informed adults that she couldn't breathe when Posey, who weighs 325 pounds, was sitting on her. Posey reportedly tried CPR on the child and called 911.
Posey was arrested and charged with cruelty toward a child and homicide in Dericka's death. Grace Joan Smith, 69, and James Edmund Smith, 62, who were listed as Dericka's parents, were also charged with child neglect for failing to act on the abuse.
Posey was listed as the Smiths' niece. She was allegedly called by Grace to discipline Dericka. The parents told police that Posey struck Dericka with a ruler and metal pipe and that the girl then ran to an armchair.
James told police that Posey sat on Dericka for close to 10 minutes before the child said she could not breathe. He told the deputy that Posey sat on her for two additional minutes, and then found the child unresponsive when she stood up.
According to Mike Carroll, who is the secretary of the Florida Department of Children and Families, the Smiths have a history with the child welfare system.
"Dericka's death is appalling and DCF will continue coordinating with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office to hold anyone responsible for her death accountable," Carroll said in a statement to Pensacola News Journal. "As the family has a prior interaction with the child welfare system, a thorough quality assurance review will be conducted to review all prior interactions this family has had with the child welfare system."
Posey's bail was set at $125,000. She has since been released from jail. Grace's bail was set at $75,000, while James is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. The Smiths remain in jail.
Social media users were outraged by the news of what the family may have done to the child.
"Sitting on a child for being out of control?" questioned one user on the New York Daily News' Facebook page. "Have you heard of timeout or take the child's toys away for not listening to the grown ups? Wow!"
"What is going on with all of these people killing children, how could you not know that your weight would kill or break bones," wrote another. "Everything free has a price, please put more time into selecting who you are leaving children with."
