After being accused of raping an underage girl, a New York Police Department sergeant took his own life, reports the New York Post.
Sgt. Joel Doseau, who had worked for the department for 12 years, was reportedly found dead on Aug. 20 with a plastic bag over his head in his childhood home in Brooklyn, New York. Sources revealed that a hose attached to a nearby butane gas tank fed into the plastic bag and asphyxiated the 43-year-old cop.
Additionally, authorities discovered on Doseau’s body a suicide note, in which the NYPD sergeant wrote, “Tell my family I love them,” reports NY Daily News.
On Aug. 5, Doseau found himself under arrest at his Bushwick apartment. The following day, prosecutors accused Doseau of an ongoing sexual relationship with a young girl, now in her early 20s. The relationship began in 2008, when the girl was 15 years old and under the age of legal consent.
Reports from court papers revealed the relationship between the two began online. Believing him to be much younger than he actually was, the girl apparently sent the cop nude photographs of herself. The online chats and nude photos allegedly progressed into physical sex some time during the summer of 2008.
A few days before Doseau’s indictment, the girl came forward to authorities.
As a result of their findings, a grand jury in Brooklyn laid down the charges for Doseau — a 40-count indictment, including seven counts of rape, five counts of promoting the sexual performance of a child, 11 counts of sexual abuse and misconduct and three counts of acting in a manner injurious to a child, documents NY Daily News.
On top of his legal troubles, the NYPD sergeant struggled financially and personally. Doseau’s house was in foreclosure and both of his parents were dead, neighbors explained.
“He was a lonely guy,” one neighbor told NY Daily News.
Doseau was facing up to 15 years in prison.
