NYC Taxpayers Spend $24 Million To Protect Trump Tower

The New York Police Department tallied up the costs of protecting Trump Tower in Manhattan for President Donald Trump and his family, and the total came to $24 million for the 75 days between Election Day and Inauguration Day.

NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said protecting the building posed a "unique and unparalleled" challenge for the country's largest police force.

"The NYPD now serves a dual role in protecting the First Family and securing Trump Tower while simultaneously acting as a municipal police department charged with serving and protecting the millions of residents, visitors, and workers in the city," O'Neill wrote in a latter addressed to the New York City area members of Congress, which was published by Politico. "Moreover, Trump Tower itself now presents a target to those who wish to commit acts of terror against our country, further straining our limited counterterrorism resources."

The $24 price tag is $11 million less than previous estimates, but the daily rate still comes out to more than a quarter-million dollars per day.

"After an extensive analysis of payrolls, overtime sheets, and over 25,000 individual patrol log entries, New York has determined that the NYPD’s security operations for those seventy-five days totaled $24 million," O'Neill wrote. "The average daily rate throughout this entire period was $308,000. The average through December 20th was $334,000. After December 20th, based on more detailed information of security needs and approaching the end of the holidays, deployment was decreased and the average daily rate was $275,000."

New York City taxpayers will foot the bill, which is something Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York would like to see changed.

"We all know that it is a national responsibility of the federal government to protect the President. And that’s as it should be," Schumer said at a press conference, according to the New York Daily News. "But right now, New York City taxpayers are paying a huge amount of money to protect the President and the Trump Tower."
