New York Police Department (NYPD) officer Gregory Zakoscielny saved a woman’s life on Wednesday, after he witnessed her choke on a cough drop behind the wheel of a car.
Zakoscielny was on a routine speed enforcement drive along the Bronx River Highway when he spotted a woman choking on a cough drop.
In a video of the incident, which was posted to the NYPD’s Facebook page, Zakoscielny can be seen approaching the unnamed woman’s car. The car can be seen with its hazard lights on and is stopped in the middle of the lane.
According to Zakoscielny, the woman appeared to be having difficulty breathing and was holding her throat.
“Are you choking?” Zakoscielny says in the video. "You’re choking?”
The woman manages to reply as she steps out of the car. Zakoscielny then instructs her to put her hands on her chest as he performs several compressions, until finally the cough drop is dislodged and the woman gasps for air. The 49-year-old takes a seat in her car again while Zakoscielny calls an ambulance.
Authorities reported that the woman’s life was likely saved by Zakoscielny’s timely appearance.
Although the video ends abruptly, the woman appears to have recovered from the event.
