An NYPD officer was caught on tape beating a young man in Brooklyn who was allegedly trying to skip out of paying train fare. Witnesses said it looked like the cop literally cracked opened the man’s head when he beat him with his night stick.
Lawson Donovan, 20, is seen in the video resisting arrest while the officer tries to handcuff him. As a result, the officer hits him twice – first at the legs and then, when Donovan appears to grab towards the stick, the officer hits him again on the head.
Marielle Anas was on her way home from work when she came across the incident at the Myrtle Avenue-Broadway JMZ station. She described what she saw to the NY Daily News.
“It was one of the most awful things I’ve ever seen,” Anas, 28, said. “I have blood all over my jeans. The brutality of the nightstick – it was crazy. It looked like his head exploded. I couldn’t believe I was seeing it happen.”
As Anas films the incident, bystanders begin to shout at the police officer to stop the beat down. Lawson’s female friend intervenes and tries to console Lawson as the officer takes hold of him.
The officer then takes Lawson to other police officers who reassure bystanders that he will be taken to the ambulance. According to NYPD sources, Lawson had no criminal record, but will most likely be charged with fare beating, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and obstructing government administration. NYPD Internal Affairs will be looking into the incident to see if any protocol was broken by the police officer who made the arrest.
